Tanks and Toilets – building blocks for community health and wellbeing

Reliable access to clean water radically improves people's daily lives. In eastern Indonesia, many households face the daily burden of carting unclean water from changing, distant sources. Time spent by mostly women and children collecting water limits their time to devote to vitally important education, income, and food-producing activities.

Unclean sources of water make things tougher. Hygiene is a critical issue, with many exposed to high levels of disease and debilitating diarrhoea. Malnutrition is high, with more than a quarter of individuals experiencing stunted growth.

In Oelnaineno Village, West Timor, where dry seasons can last up to 8 long months, most households carry water from the river daily. The river may flood in the wet season, but for the rest of the year it can run dry. When that happens, women must dig scoop holes in the sandy banks to tap the water table or access a small dam.

When NTA started working in Oelnaineno, villagers prioritised building toilets, and continued to travel and carry water for their bathroom needs. Now that 163 households have toilets in place, they are keen to go further.

There is no better time to make a tax-deductible contribution to the NTA as we work to bolster water supply and sanitation for 20 families in Oelnaineno Village. A donation of merely $100 will cover the purchase and transport of essential building materials for one family's water tank.

Build a tank. Change a life.

For three decades, the NTA has formed relationships with communities throughout eastern Indonesia to jointly build 15,000-litre concrete off-the-roof rainwater harvesting tanks. NTA has already funded more than 1,500 tanks, but there is an urgent need for many more.

For just $500, NTA provides materials for each tank plus guided support to ensure the community constructs a product that will pass the test of time. (Note: the price of tanks in Oelnaineno is slightly higher than the usual $450 because of this village's remoteness.)

Your donation will help families access clean water, a basic necessity that underpins health, dignity and prosperity. Donate by 30 June to claim your donation as a deduction in this year’s tax.

How will the funds be used?

Help us reach our goal of raising $10,000, which will support the construction of rainwater tanks. By freeing women from the burden of collecting water from the river, which means travelling on average two hours per day, the harvesting tanks will improve sanitation and support better health outcomes for the community.

Any additional funding will support our ongoing priority to construct 100 off-the-roof water tanks in West Timor and Flores, eastern Indonesia.
